- Annual Percentage Rate (APR)
- The total annual cost of borrowing expressed as a percentage. APR includes both the interest rate and any fees that are part of the loan arrangement, making it the most accurate comparison metric when evaluating personal loan offers from different lenders.
- Amortization
- The process by which a loan balance is reduced through scheduled periodic payments. Each payment covers a portion of the interest owed and a portion of the principal. Early in the loan term, most of each payment goes toward interest; later payments apply more toward the principal balance.
- Bad Credit
- A general term referring to a low credit score, typically below 580 on the FICO scale. Borrowers with bad credit have fewer personal loan options available, and those that are available typically carry higher APR to reflect the increased lending risk.
- Borrower
- An individual who applies for and receives a personal loan, accepting responsibility for repaying the loan amount plus interest and any applicable fees according to the agreed loan terms.
- Collateral
- An asset pledged by a borrower to secure a loan. If the borrower fails to repay, the lender can claim the collateral. Personal loans through Direct Cash Lender's network are unsecured — no collateral is required.
- Credit Score
- A numerical representation (typically 300–850 on the FICO scale) of a borrower's creditworthiness, calculated from credit history data. Credit scores are a primary factor in determining personal loan APR and eligibility.
- Credit Utilization Ratio
- The percentage of available revolving credit currently being used. Calculated by dividing total revolving balances by total revolving credit limits. Below 30% is generally considered healthy; high utilization can negatively affect credit scores.
- Credit Report
- A detailed record of a borrower's credit history maintained by the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion). Contains information on accounts, payment history, balances, and public records such as bankruptcies.
- Debt Consolidation
- The process of combining multiple debts into a single new loan, ideally at a lower overall APR or with a more manageable repayment structure. A personal loan used for debt consolidation replaces multiple payments with one fixed monthly payment.
- Debt-to-Income Ratio (DTI)
- Total monthly debt obligations divided by gross monthly income, expressed as a percentage. Lenders use DTI to assess a borrower's ability to manage additional debt. A DTI below 36% is generally preferred for personal loan applications.
- Default
- Failure to repay a loan according to the agreed terms. Defaulting on a personal loan typically results in significant damage to the borrower's credit score, collections activity, and potential legal action by the lender.
- Disbursement
- The transfer of approved loan funds from the lender to the borrower. For personal loans through our network, disbursement typically occurs via direct deposit to the borrower's checking account within 1–2 business days of approval.
- FICO Score
- A credit scoring model developed by Fair Isaac Corporation, used by most US lenders to assess creditworthiness. FICO scores range from 300 to 850, with higher scores indicating lower credit risk.
- Fixed Interest Rate
- An interest rate that remains the same throughout the entire loan term. Most personal loans offer fixed rates, making monthly payments predictable.
- Funding Speed
- The time between loan approval and the disbursement of funds. Many direct cash lenders can fund approved personal loans within one to two business days.
- Grace Period
- A defined period after a payment due date during which a payment can be made without incurring a late fee or being reported as delinquent. Grace period terms vary by lender — check your loan agreement for specific details.
- Hard Credit Inquiry
- A credit check performed by a lender during a formal loan application process. Hard inquiries appear on your credit report and may slightly reduce your credit score. Contrasted with a soft inquiry, which does not affect your score.
- Installment Loan
- A loan repaid through a series of equal, scheduled payments over a defined period. Personal loans are typically installment loans, with fixed monthly payments covering both principal and interest.
- Interest Rate
- The percentage of the loan principal charged by the lender as the cost of borrowing, expressed annually. The interest rate differs from APR in that it does not include fees.
- Lender
- A financial institution or individual that provides funds to a borrower under agreed terms, including repayment schedule and interest. Direct Cash Lender is a matching service, not a lender — actual lenders in our network provide the funds.
- Loan Term
- The length of time over which a loan is scheduled to be repaid. Personal loan terms typically range from 6 to 60 months. Shorter terms generally mean higher monthly payments but less total interest paid.
- Loan Matching Service
- A platform that connects borrowers with potential lenders from a network, without itself acting as a lender. Direct Cash Lender is a loan matching service — we facilitate connections but do not lend money or set loan terms.
- Origination Fee
- A one-time fee charged by some lenders to process a personal loan application. Typically expressed as a percentage of the loan amount (1%–8%). Origination fees are included in the APR calculation and should be considered when comparing loan offers.
- Personal Loan
- An unsecured loan provided to an individual for personal use, repaid in fixed monthly installments over a defined term. Personal loans can be used for virtually any purpose, including debt consolidation, medical expenses, auto repair, and general personal expenses.
- Principal
- The original amount borrowed, before interest or fees are added. Monthly payments on a personal loan apply to both the principal balance and the accrued interest.
- Prepayment Penalty
- A fee charged by some lenders when a borrower pays off a loan before the end of the agreed term. Many personal loan lenders do not charge prepayment penalties — always confirm this before accepting an offer.
- Secured Loan
- A loan backed by collateral (an asset the lender can claim if the borrower defaults). Mortgages and auto loans are secured loans. Personal loans through Direct Cash Lender's network are typically unsecured.
- Soft Credit Inquiry
- A credit check that does not affect your credit score, performed when you check your own credit or when a matching service pre-screens available offers. Direct Cash Lender uses a soft inquiry during the initial matching process.
- Underwriting
- The process by which a lender evaluates a loan application to determine the borrower's creditworthiness and the terms under which they will offer a loan. Underwriting factors include credit score, income, DTI, and other financial data.
- Unsecured Loan
- A loan not backed by collateral. The lender's recourse if the borrower defaults is through legal action, not the seizure of an asset. Personal loans are typically unsecured — your assets are not pledged.
- Variable Interest Rate
- An interest rate that can change over the loan term based on a benchmark rate. Most personal loans carry fixed rates, but some products may have variable components — always confirm the rate type before accepting a personal loan offer.
Using This Glossary When Reviewing Loan Offers
When you receive a personal loan offer through Direct Cash Lender's platform, the offer will include several key terms: the loan amount, APR, monthly payment, repayment term, and any applicable fees. Before accepting any offer, ensure you understand each element and what it means for your total repayment obligation.
The most important comparison metric across personal loan offers is APR — it accounts for both the interest rate and fees, giving you a single number that reflects the true annual cost of borrowing. Two loans with the same monthly payment may have very different total costs if their APRs and terms differ.
For questions about specific terms in an offer you've received, contact your lender directly. For questions about how Direct Cash Lender's service works, visit our FAQ page, read the How It Works guide, or reach us at [email protected].
